1974 Mercury 850 stator wires all the insulation is gone except for about 1/4 inch next to the coil can this be saved and new wires attached ?
Is there a difference or are the wires the same , I can't see any markings on the small part I can see
Thought I would soider new wire and add shrink tube to protect

I wouldnt solder them. Try non insulated crimp butt ends. Use a good crimper not one of those auto parts store pieces of crap. Then a shrink wrap sleeve over the top.

Re: Stator wires

The wires were both yellow and go to the rectifier. Doesn't matter which post on rectifier.

These 1970's engines had wire insulation problems. My 1975, 850 had wiring problems also. I soldered copper wire to my stator, but had to use some old style flux with lead to get the joint to take. I had to replace ALL the wiring.
