Stators & Switch boxes

This is a topic that might get something started. In the marine I work in there is confusion. We like to have this discution every time we find a bad switchbox wether it be on Johnson Evinrude or Mercury. If the swicthbox is bad do you have to change the stator also? Now be reashured that I am not asking if the stator is bad do you change the switchbox.<br /> We have experienced mechanics from other marines and marinas telling opposite stories on this. Some will say if you have a bad switchbox change stator. Others say if you have spark after changing switchbox leave stator on.<br /><br /> So what is the story if you have a bad switchbox?<br /> Replace stator or not?

What happen to checking it with a meter as outlined in OEM service manual? Would you like to pay for a good part to be replaced? Would you do that kind of repair work?

AMEN, Clanton...parts that TEST TO SPEC stay on the motor...why take them off?<br />These type of troubleshootin questions always make me chuckle...that mysterious stator/trigger is nothing more than a simple copper wire wrapped around steel posts several thousand times...how hard can it be to test one?

Guys I'm with you on if the part test good leave it on. I just beleive that the people at my shop and other shops around my area beleive if you have a switchbox failure that it is do to the stator failing in the past. I mean I got guys with 15 to 20 years of experience under there belts telling me 2 different. One saying if you replace switchbox replace stator cause stator probably took switchbox out. Then saying why not replace them both cause they feel that if you only replace one that the motor will be back. I have others tell me that they don't replace both unless there is a problem after replacing one.<br /> Now as far as stators go I have experienced in the past with cust. calling and saying there motor don't run we would get there and it would run fine no problems then they would call back in a week and you was back over there and there motor running fine again. Come to find out that they would have a bad stator but from the time that the cust. had called and by the time we would get to there dock a few days later the stator would have enough time to cool down and not show any readings out of normal. Now on the other hand if you got the motor to operating temp. then the motor would start acting up it would show you the failure on the readings.<br /> So I do know how a cold motor compares to a hot motor a long as the stator has not completly failed you can get faulse readings.<br /><br /> Nick

Cold readings do not always tell the story.Just replaced the starter motor on my dads 72 C10 chevy pickup. It tested just fine on the in store tester but when it got hot it would drag and barely turn over.Had been on truck over 20 years.Put new one on and solved problem completely with no other chages made.Don't know how this translates to stators but i understand nicksters point.

Yeah, kind of expensive to be throwing on every motor. If I heard of a heat problem I would run it for a while and test it again hot. <br />Sounds like some mighty cheesey electronics that cannot stand some out of range voltage from some other part that is likely to happen...
