I am still re-assembling my '68 Thunderbird and '72 Merc 1400 (which now runs thanks to the patient answers some of you have provided to my dumb questions).

I am now working on installing a new helm/steering wheel/cables and I am missing a steering arm from the cable end to the motor. I cannot find a part # online, although there is one stamped 820007 on ebay that I think might work. It does not seem to x-ref with the 1400 and is for late 70s-early 80s Mercs, but it "appears" to be the same part.

I'd appreciate any advice on part #s or equivalents that will work with a 140 horse motor.

Thanks!

You should easily be able to find one. Merc made a ton of motors with the same steering arm, so they should be common. I wouldn't get hung up an a particular motor year. Any steering arm for an inline 4/6 cylinder from 1970-1988 should work. some are adjustable as well. As a fall back, you could fabricate one from some threaded rod. Make it Z-shaped, and use 4 nylon lock nuts and 4 washers.

Thanks. Sort of what I figured. Not too many huge advancements in outboard steering technology between 1972 and 1980 :D
