Evinrude 60 hp 1980 I believe on a 16 V bottom heavy boat.
I have to replace the steering. I notice that the sleeve or pipe on the
engine that the steering cable goes into
is bad rusted. Also some help. Do I replace that also or just clean it up- if there
is a way to clean this pipe up how? I see some rust inside.
The steering cable I took out today and I notice it about 13' 7"
long it has a gear on the end by the steering wheel.
Also some help. Where the best place to get this cable?

If the steering tube is really rusted up bad, consider replacing it with a stainless tube. Most marine shops can help out with that.

Is the "gear" a long gear? Or is it mounted in the helm....under the dash? Check the link below to iboats Mall. They carry cables and complete steering systems.

http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...ywords=steering+cable&submit.x=31&submit.y=10

Thanks OBJ
It looks a little like the one at the link here

http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...pinion&**********=656666476&*******=036137163

accept I can not see the gear in this picture.
But my gear was only about 4 inches.
It looks like this one will work.
What I wanted to do was keep my old steering
wheel and the gear on the end and just connect
the new cable to it.
But it might not be that easy.

Re: Steering cable Evinrude 60 hp 1980

OBJ or anyone
How would they measure the length?
My cable from end of the square to the end of the cable was about 14 ft 7 inches when I figure in
give or take a little because I cut it off
behind the cable bolt that screw into the sleeve
and I figure that was about a foot there
I forgot to add that part.
So I would think I should measure from the
gear to the end of the cable?
What do you think?

Better to order long than to short.

You probably have the rack and pinion steering set up. If your not sure what to get, take your rig to a local dealer for some advice and help. Near the engine end of the cable, there should be some a name and length of the cable if it hasn't been worn off. You can use this to get a replacement. Tele-flex makes a bunch.
