Steering cable guide tube?

I guess that what you might call it. Anyways, I have a teleflex dual cable system mounted on a 1985 Merc 150hp. One cable goes into what I would call the main tube on the motor. The other goes into this cheaper looking tube mounted in a bracket attached to the front of the motor. That one appears as if it's about to break. I can't find a source for this. What do you call it and where do you get it? It is threaded on the outside on both ends and sort of screws into the bracket. I guess I could make one out of a piece of pipe. Thanks for any advice.

Dave...

Re: Steering cable guide tube?

Dakk1,
From your description it appears that one of your steering cable tube attachments to one of you motors is rotted and needs replacement. To properly correct this problem, it appears that you will need to replace the entire cable. I would recommend that you go by a Merc marine dealer and speak with the service manager and get his advice on this issue. If you need to replace the cable, then bite the bullet and do the job right. The reason for this precaution is to keep you from having a high speed accident from steering failure at a critical point, such as in a tight turn, crowded waterway, or narrow channel.
Good luck, be safe!

Re: Steering cable guide tube?

Thanks for resonding Omega-1. Actually I believe/hope the cables are OK since these are only 2 years old. Although, the boat was not used at all last year. It appears as if the front cable, that is the stainless steel rod at the end, is froze inside the guide tube. I was able to get the front tube disconnected and the rear cable seemed OK here in the yard. Filled that front tube up with PB blaster and will let it sit overnight. I'll give it a go tomorrow. Rest assured it will be right before it hits the water.

Dave ..
