steering cable removal help

Boat is a 95 24' albemarle with dp-c1 drive. When i try to remove the steering cable from the steering assist ram it runs into the lip around the motor well. Is there some kind of trick to get this cable out or am I just going to have to remove or loosen the power steering ram?

I think i am going to try a different approach. That thing looks very hard to get at so i am just going to grind the fiberglass that is in the way. Then just a little 2"patch after the new cable is in. I'm chalking this up to poor design.
