I have a 1989 VIP Model SK-8 with a Yamaha V4 115 and I want to know if there is a step-by-step replacement procedure online for replacing the steering cable? How and where do I determine which cable to purchase? What is the difference between a cable and a cable assembly?

hello<br /> there is no "procedure" each hull may be slightly different. the cable may or may not even be avalible. can you try to identify the helm unit or at least get some part numbers off the cable.

Re: Steering cable replacement

West Marine's catalog( www.westmarine.com )has a good desription of how to measure the steering cable. I just redid mine and you will probably have to loosen or remove (hang) the engine to get the old cable out and to insert the new cable into the steering tube. You can also go to the Teleflex website (popular makers of steering cable) to get info. There are 2 types rotary helm or rack and pinion helm. The rotary is a circular unit under the dash. The rack and pinion has a long rack under the dash. There are 2 subtypes Feedback (older) and Nofeedback (newer). You need to check the cable model number on the old one. The model number and a look here on Iboats Marine Mall will probably tell you what you need. Replacement cables for the rack and pinion system include the rack. Replacement cables for the rotary helms just attach to the helm I believe.

When do you replace the entire assembly: helm, cable and fittings?

complette assemblies are available quite cheaply. a cable is only half the equation. helms wear too.

Re: Steering cable replacement

most times you can buy the complete rotary helm/cable kit for about the cost of a replacement cable.
