Steering Cable Stuck

I have a 1978 Evinrude 115hp and the steering cable is stuck.I have put oil on it and hit it with a hammer but it want move.Im thinking about sliding the hole works out from the motor and putting it back new.
Can someone help me on this?

That's one way of doing it, unfortunatly you will probably find that the tilt tube is just as stuck in the brackets as the cable is in the tube. There is no easy way. It's a fight all the way.

But you'll learn not to let it get that way again. Taking the cable out and cleaning and re-lubing it is a normal maintenance item

what type of lube would you recommend to use when putting the steering rod back in?

No the Tilt tube is not stuck and I just got this boat for a fixer upper.

If it isn't stuck, then yes take the whole thing out if that's the easiest solution.

Ok, Where can You find a tilt tube,I have looked and cant find one.

ifind it easier to get the cable out of the tilt tube with it on the motor, motor on boat. retract the cable as far as you can, the take a piece of hard wood, put it one the end of the steering rod to protect it, and drive it out with a hammer. if you get to the edge of the motor and it still won't come out get a drift pin, and drive it on thru. ain't no easy way.
