steering cables swap

I have a mid 70s johnson 70 and my question is are the steering cables universel from motor make to motor make. My 70 has a stiff cable and needs to be replace and my son has a cable off a mid 70s merc 115 , will it work if the length is corect or does each make have there own setup. Thanks

The cables are pretty much universal. Unless you have a really, really old one.

Since i have someone responding i have another question. Do all of the 70 johnsons have a tell tail to see if the water pump is working like the mercs do. If they do where is it i cant find it anywhere.

You just have to make sure it coming out the back i dont think they did that on johnsons in the 70 but look for hose

That mtr didn't have a tell tale. And It's a 1975 model.
