Steering friction adjustment? 72 Evinrude 25hp

Been having problems with this motor NOT going in a straight line when I take my hand off of it.

I've traced the source to the steering friction adjustment screw, I figure this because I dont have one. :0

The info that I have in my manual only shows what the screw is and what it does..



The problem is what I see in that area couldnt possibly need "only" a screw to get it to work. I'm only seeing a shaft that looks like maybe a bolt goes around it. When I get the screw it doesnt look like it gonna screw into anything. I'm thinking maybe theres a bolt that goes on the shaft and maybe the screw goes into the bolt, but I'm just guessing.




Is there something missing and if so what would I need to get along with the steering friction screw?

I can't make heads or tails out of the picture. There should be a 1/4-20 threaded hole in the casting to accept the screw and spring. Maybe the boss on the casting is busted off??? The screw presses on the co-pilot plate and rubber co-pilot spacer to squeeze the pilot shaft liner/bearing.

I think you photographed the nut on the upper motormount. The steering friction screw is threaded in the casted tube around the upper turnshaft bushing.

Glad yall caught that. I didnt realize it was under the tilt lock/unlock lever :$

I got it tight (2 1/2 turns to fully tight) and it does seem to be better than before. I'll run her in the next few day for a test.

Since yall figured the pic was of the upper motormount, does it sound right to not have anything on that shaft/bolt?
Seems like there'd be a nut or something holding it on.
