I have a 74 16.5 tri-hull galstron with a Mercury 1500 with power tilt. The problem is the engine steers very hard when in any degree of tilt but not when straight down. It is really hard to turn when going any faster than idle. Any idea what the cause might be?

Re: Steering Issue

Welcome to iboats.

Could it be because it's too much motor for the boat? Aren't those rated for 850s?

Thanks for the reply. This engine was on the boat when I bought it 10 years ago and up to last year, it all worked fine. This is a recent issue that has started.

Re: Steering Issue

sounds like if it worked well for 10 years it could be the steering cable is failing or the trim tab fell off. good luck and keep posting

Re: Steering Issue

Tskoro, It seems to me that the force of the motor at above idle, may be causing the steering to bind. I would check the play in the top motor mounts and smoothness of the tilt tube-to-steering rod operation.

Thanks for the replies...the trim tab is there. So onto the motor mounts and steering rod. I will let you know.
