steering issues please help!

Hello, I have a 20ft sea ray 4.3 L merc I/O. with a rack n pinion steering P# ssc13418 teleflex.
Now with my boat being 20 ft wouldn't I want something shorter? The reason I ask is this one seemed to long. My next question i have wires going to both sides of my lower unit to these circle pieces the one side both of them ripped out. I have no idea??? What are they? and how could I fixed that as well.

Depends on the routing of the cable. That's one of those things you have to look at and see if there is too much slack in it. If so, you have to get a shorter cable, but no one here can tell yo how much. You have to measure.

As far as those round things. The starboard side is for a gauge sender, the port side is a trim limit switch.
What year is your boat, better yet, what outdrive do you have?

I am no steering pro, but you might have real long cables because, cables need to have a gentle sweep when routed thru the boat. Hard curves in the cables are bad. At least thats my thoughts on that. I could be wrong.

As far as the wiring, there is a section with wiring diagrams by model and year, at the top of the forum. If you can identify what wires you are asking about, it will be easier to help.

I have a 1988 my lower unit it a 4.3L w/sea ray emblem on it white in color. I want to say alpha 1 bought it used with no papers.

SeaRay did have it's own color paint and decals on some drives back then, they were Alpha I's.
Head up the the Adults Only sticky at the top of the forum and download the manuals for your engine and drive.

You want manual #6 for your drive, #7 for your engine.
The drive manual covers the replacement and adjustment of the trim limit and gauge senders.
