As my on going quest to get my motor and boat goes on I have discovered that I am missing the silver bar or link if you will that connects the steering cable to the motor. This steering cable goes through the tilt tube and from what I have seen there is a almost L shaped piece of metal I seem to be missing. I have tried calling around and nobody seems to know what i am needing except one person and he was unsure what it was called. The boat is a 1985 bayliner capri and the motor is a 85 85hp force outboard. Does anyone know what I am referring to and what it is called? Is there a cheap alternitave if I cant find one? Any suggestions short of replacing the steering cable would be nice. Not sure what type the cable is. It comes from the drivers area down same side of boat and out the back with one large sleeve and then a nut that attaches to the motor tube and the smaller one that actually moves sticks out the other side. I hope that is a helpful descripition as I left my camera and cell phone in my wifes car today and she is at work on the north side of town, about 30 minutes away so no pictures. Till later this evening.

Re: Steering link question

It is called a link rod I believe. I have a few laying around...when i get home from work I will look up the part numbers and see if they may apply to your situation.

So is it possible to use a couple bolts and a peice of steel to make a steering link to work for a test run or until i can find the correct one? I plan on getting one I am just having trouble finding it unless bigdaddy has one.

Re: Steering link question

SWEET. I am hoping the steering cable goes in easy enough tonight. Last night I spent 2 hours cleaning rust out of the tilt tube only to have it gum up on me going in and I had to tap the tilt tube off of the steering cable. How easy should that go in? There was alot of rust in the tube. On top of that the grease is all sorts of gummy on the steering cable. I forgot to clean it off before I attempted a install so it was not the best conditions. I plan on cleaning the cable really well tonight and then re greasing it up. The trick is getting it installed while the motor is on I had no idea that was where it went when I was installing everything. I was able to get it started last night so if everything is clean I think I will be ok in the installing part. Just not sure how snug a fit everything should be.
