steering question

I'm putting a 70 HP Evinrude on a 1965 18' Starcraft. The boat had the cable/pully steering system with a small (33HP) motor when it last ran. The motor was stolen. I've been told that I should get rid of the old style steering and replace it with a new system. I've got everything except the cable to re-install the original steering. In your opinion, would the old style steering be safe with the 70 HP motor?
I know that I can get a new steering system for a few hundred bucks, but I'm to the point where I'd like to save a few $ and get it in the water.

Re: steering question

It will be fine for that engine but I would at least install new cable and springs. Race boats have ran this set-up for years with more than a 70hp. Heck the racing Allisons come with it from the factory(little more heavy duty through)

In my opinion - Yes. I got new cable at Home depot. 3/16 galvanized, vinyl coated if I remember. 49 cents a foot.

Re: steering question

Have you checked the motor out, full water test. If not you may want to buy the cable, test the motor and if it's good then look to upgrade. If it turns out the motor needs work, you can put your money there first.
