Steering... Rotary or rack n pinion?

Just started looking into new steering systems. So far I've noticed that they are either a rotary system, or rack and pinion. Not familiar with either. Which is better suited for an open 3-seater Starcraft 16 footer with a 40hp Johnson? Which would be easier to install and maintain in yet-to-be-built centred-on-the-right console?
Please and thank you.

Rotary should be very simple for your application - I've installed 2 of them. Be sure that you follow carefully the instructions for measuring and ordering the cable. I would go with rotary. I've never used rack, but I think it's designed for faster set ups. In any event, the rotary is very easy to install and will give you years of trouble free service. You won't be disappointed with it.

Thanks guys... rotary will be my choice. I checked out the Teleflex link and found the correct kit. Now I just need to find a local dealer here in Ontario somewhere and save up my allowance.
And I'll start drawing my plans for the console.
Talk later.

You can order through iboats. Prices are as good as anywhere and shipping is pretty quick. I picked my Teleflex 4.2 nfb rotary from iboats....it was the cheapest I found anywhere.

Support your local retailer or they wont be around to help you when you need them. Internet is great for a lot of things but it's killing retail shops that need to make money to pay their employees.

Most on here tend to split between local dealers and iboats. For the exact reason you said, to support them so they stay around. Without the iboats store, this free forum wouldn't be around.

Re: Steering... Rotary or rack n pinion?

So I checked the prices at iBoats and at the Pro Bass Shop in Toronto. From iBoats for 15' kit was $143.00(US) plus $58.00(US)!!! for shipping = $210.00 (US). Now this doesn't include the exchange rate or any duties, etc., which could be another 20 or 30 or more bucks. At Pro Bass, $174.00, plus our usual 13% tax = $197.00. So I think I will shop locally on this one, not just for savings, but in case of a defect or malfunction, it would be much easier to return. But as I mentioned earlier, I still gotta save up my allowances... hehehe

Good point Hadn't thought of that. Sometimes it seems that the younger generation (I have no idea how old any of you are) doesn't stop to think how online sales effect a retailer. I actually have kids come into my store, look at things, touch them, play with them, and then go buy them online and ask me to install them. Little bastids.

I'm pretty sure Hully Gully on Wonderland Rd. will have what you need.

Only if your stateside for 48 hrs. Anything subject to duty sent thru mail or transport you pay duty. However, most things made in the US are duty free to Canada.

This is a nice sentiment, but at the same time alot or most of us are here because the local shop refused to work on our boat because "I don't work on anything older than a 1986." While I understand the shop's reasoning overall, I feel no qualms about supporting an outlet like iboats who offers the wealth of knowledge provided by this forum as well as professionalism and competitive pricing when parts are needed. I've "needed" local shops many times, but their extreme bias toward my mid 70's Merc inline and OMC triple led me to become a DIY'er and iboats has "been there" for me - so they have done more to earn my business.
