Steering wheel inop...

Last night I was out fishing when my steering wheel started making a lot of noise like knocking then all of a sudden I lost everything. I am not sure if I need to replace the helm the cables or if I should replace the entire thing. And where is the best place to find one. West Marine, Boaters World online somewhere....Please Help

What type of steering?Mechanical or hydraulic?

EDIT: Just read your old post and my answer doesn't apply. Look for a broken cable if you have not replaced it already.

It is mechanical. I am thinking that it is the helm but I am not sure what it would sound like and feel like when broken. It was making loud noises before it finally let go...
