Just got new Regal model 2000BR with 5.0 GXi 270 hp VP. The stock 14.25 X 21 AL prop is slow out of the hole and slips more than I would like. Boat pulls nice from mid rpm all the way to 5000 with three adults and two kids (aprx 650lb) and fully loaded (no problem hitting 5K). I'm thinking of going to four blade SS 14.0 X 21 prop to maybe help it get out of the hole better and limiting some slip, what I don't want is to loose top end speed. What would you recommend for my set up without loosing top end performance? Can any of the Mercury props be adopted to Volvo drive with good success? Will a 4blade SS prop of same pitch -.25 diameter (14") give me a better hole shot without sacrificing top speed? Also vented or no? Lots of questions on my part so thank you for any input.

PS: Volvo Penta SX 1:60 ratio, boat weight 3600#, fast track stepped hull.

Nice ride you have there....How many hours are on that engine?

1. im sure its efi...You can only hit 4950 with efi......serious question at WOT do you ever hear a very slight miss it lasts only a nano second.

2. No matter what is said only Trim tabs will give both hole shot and top speed.

3. Heres something to think about...3 blades give the top end speed..and 4 blades give you top end midrange speed...A good 4 blade SS will cost you about 1-3 mph you should spend about 5% of your boating time @ WOT

Nothing is perfect....

Thank you, the engine has a whooping 8 hours on it and it is an EFI :D I think I'm going to get Solas Rubex 14" X 21P 4 blade SS prop. I'm thinking that 4 thiner SS blades will be equal to 3 thick Al blades without inherent flex aluminum has. Less flex and extra bite from the forth blade should help, at least that is my thinking, and 4950 rpm X same pitch should provide same top speed, unless the drag from 4 blade would prevent it from reaching top rpm which I don't think it would. Any thoughts welcome.

I believe its still recomended to wait 50 hours before any prolonged wot runs...Did you get a engine manual?? it would be intresting to know if they have changed the break in period. It should loosen up a bit after 50 hrs and may gain a few hundred rpm's

Initial brake in is 10 hours per manual, key word i prolonged. I've broken in many new motors on performance cars and couple of boats, it's good to let the rpm go up/down just don't leave it there for long. Not trying to make it faster just better out of hole and less slippage at slower speeds.

Well a 21ss 4 balde is really not going get it to climb out of the hole....That is push it over the pressure wave created by the bow. The solas is a good pick make sure its a HR Titan...but if you want to climb out faster trim tabs are the way. Iam assuming this a bit of a heavy boat and a deep v....that makes for a great ride on a chop...but they drag abit climbing out

You are spot on about hull weight and design as well as climbing out of the hole. Once on a plane with the stepped hull it does not take much to lunch it into warp speed :) Tabs sure sound like the right remedy, I'm just little reluctant about drilling into that beautiful new hull. Maybe I need to rethink my approach.

Hmm that boat was not cheap actually a stepped hull sounds fun
heres some thoughts..two props...;)

21p alum does 4950 sooo ss drops to 4750 in a 21 drop to a 20 4900

Stilletto Bay Pro 11 in a 20 absolute top performer in launch and midrange pefromance...It has tremdous overall lift and its high rake and cupping give up very litte speed. From launch to 4000 that boat should pull like a tractor andd accerlate like a rocket...Ive ran quite a few props and it still is old faithful. From just of plane to 50 it hands down wins every time. Below is pic of how well it lifts the entire boat....which is a 19 3400 lbs 8' beam on a 20 degree rise..The foot print you see is 24" wide thats lift...;). It gets 54 with 200 hp v6 and mechancially acts like a 21p 3blade.. It should be a real kick with that stepped hull...Umm and i-boats does price match so you can pick it up reasonabley.

Now if you can turn that prop to the rev limiter then a 22p Solas in a 3 blade will give you top overall speed...Simple stuff two props...;)...:D

Just looked at the Bay Pro II, nice prop.20P would give me top of about 54mph which is not bad considering better bottom end performance (this is just calculating RPM/pitch). The high rake and cupping might even put it little faster. Guess I'll have to go for it and try it out. Thanks for your input, Zagger.
