Hi, I just got a boat that has not been maintained for years. The trailer has lots of rust on it. i would like to get this thing all fixed up again and painted up so nobody would know it ever had issues to begin with. My question is, what would be the best way to go about this, considering the state that its in right now. All suggestion are greatly appreciated.

btw, I don't plan on doing this myself, but hiring out to do it, I just need to know what I'm asking for and that the solution will be the best way to go about it, hopefully preventing future damage. Thanks!! :D

First you need to determine what is salvagable. Hint - that fender is not.

Remove everything that can be, sandblast, then prime, then paint(lotsa choices here - probably enough for a whole new thread) the frame. Do the same to anything you plan to reuse, replace what can't be used. Don't forget bearings and seals on the axle and new lights.

Also - that winch tower and coupler would be on my short list for replacement.

My suggestion would be to scrap the trailer and buy one that is serviceable. If you plan on having someone else do the work labor alone will eat up the cost of a trailer. Add tires, fenders, winch post, and --- well I hope you see the light. The tongue in the area of the coupler looks like it's nearly rusted through. If it's that bad up there you can imagine what the frame looks like that actually went under water frequently.

I just redid a trailer for a 16' boat, but I have a full shop and a paint booth...made it easy. Mine was nowhere near as bad as what I am seeing on yours and agree with Silvertip. You can find a bazillion trailers for sale on our local craigslist. From $150 and up..something for your boat should be relatively cheap.
