Does the (-) terminal from the battery serve as the "main" into the input of the ground distribution block? Does it need to be grounded elsewhere?

Boats don't ground like cars which means you have to run a ground and power directly from the battery to the distribution blocks. So in answer to your question, yes, it is connected to battery - terminal.

Remember, you power and ground wires have to be of the same size. Many people think the ground doesn't matter, but it does.
