Re: Sterndrive Tilt Motor Dead

My OMC mechanic told me to use the OMC synthetic blue gear lube in all the gear boxes on my 1981 800 stringer. You have a electric shift I believe.
I think the lower unit uses a different lube. But the tilt gear box you can use the blue stuff. This is my 3rd season with my boat and every gear lube change has been clean in all the gear units. Does this lube make a difference?
I don't know But it works for me.

Ah-ha!

It's always knowing exactly what question to ask...

Can I get a new one/two anywhere that'll deliver to the UK?

Can I test the tilt mechanism without the gearbox plate in place, so no oil on the gears?

Thanks again,

Paul

Re: Sterndrive Tilt Motor Dead

Hello again,

I just wanted to say thanks to everybody who helped me with this; I got the motor off in the end (it mush have been the angle I was pulling the motor out at, as the hammer blow coupling just slid off the second time I tried it) and took it to be reconditioned. The reconditioning place said that water had got into the motor and had jammed the front bearing, so they're either rebuilding it or replacing it (it turns out that these prestolite motors are commonly used on truck tail-lifts, so they're in good supply).

So thanks a lot - I thought this was going to a super-expensive get-an-engineer-to-have-a-look situation.

Of course, once I lower the leg and then try to start the engine, I'll probably be back here with a whole new set of problems :)

All the best,

Paul
