Stiff shifting Yamaha--Cables fine

I am switching over my 2003 Yamaha 115 onto a different boat I just purchased that currently has a 2000 Merc on it. The 2003 has always run flawlessly, without ever a problem. I am doing the rigging on the boat and have everything pretty much done with the exception of the shift cables. The throttle cable is fine but I have problems getting the thing in an out of gear unless the prop is in the right spot. Sometimes it goes in and out fine, other times it will go into forward but not reverse, or reverse but not forward. I removed the cable and tried it by hand and the same thing happens. Turn the prop 1/4  inch and it changes. Have not run yet since I had it swapped at a marine shop. Please any Ideas.

Also, does anybody know anything about using a Mercury water pressure gauge on a Yamaha. Is this possible? The fittings that I have found don't seem to match up.

Thanks

if the clutch dogs dont line up that is what you get. its most noticed in reverse. that is why shifing at all without rotating the driveshaft or prop shaft is ill advised. the pressure gauge will work but yamaha usues metric fittings so you will be spliceing.
good luck and keep posting

I don't think this is normal. This is not how my motor was before I had it mounted on my new boat. I never really did it on purpose but you could bump it in and out of gear with the motor being off, not rotating the drive or prop shaft on every motor I have ever had or experienced, going back from this motor, the 90 merc, an 85 yamaha, 115 johnson, and an 85 johnson. They all would just slide in and out of gear like nobody's business.

How would the clutch dogs get out of line?

Some additional observations, I haven't run the motor in three weeks, is it possible something is locked up? Usually I run in a couple of times a week.

It appears that a good deal of the two cycle oil was somehow spilled inside the motor during the change over, could that have something gummed up?? I mopped up most of it inside the cowling but I didn't really probe.

I appreciate the response. One other thing this happens equally in reverse as forward.

Thanks for the tip on the pressure guage. I am most likely just going to pick up one of the teleflex aftermarket one's that look like the merc gauges.

the dog has protrusions that stick out and the gear has the same protrusions. if they dont mesh the dog cannot move into the in gear positon and stops. when you rotate the gear or dog they will mesh and the dog can slide into position.
