Hi all. I'm having a bit of a problem with the steering on my Johnson 115 it is very stiff. I removed steering cable the and it is definatly stiff at the engine I was able to get the lower grease fittings to take grease and that eased it up a bit but the upper fitting does not seem to be accepting any. Could the zerk be plugged up? or should I be using an air assisted grease gun instead of a pump type gun? Any help will really be appreciated.

Re: stiff steering

More likely, you have a bunch of caked up, dried up old grease in there, defying your attempts to add new grease. It's important to grease those things on a regular basis. I do mine twice a season, but that's pure fresh water use. In salt water, more frequent greasing is needed.

What to do now? You could try removing the fitting and use some hand tool to bore through the hardened grease, then put in a new fitting and try to get some fresh grease in there. It's also possible to dissolve the old grease, once you get through the caked up stuff, by injecting a solvent through the fitting and working the steering to help distribute it. It can take a bit of time and hard work, but once you can grease the thing so fresh grease is well-distributed, frequent regreasing should eventually rectify the situation.

Of course, you could also tear the assembly down and clean it up and check the parts, but that's a big job. I'd work on trying to do it the other way.

Re: stiff steering

Thanks for responding. I bought this motor used and I am trying to get it back to 100%. This is the last problem that I needed to resolve, the only other thing wrong with it was the guy I bought it from said that it ran rough, it took about a minute to fix that. He chaged the plugs and wires, only thing was he kind of messed up a bit, he tried wirering to the fireing order instead of direct #1 coil to #1 plug etc. So for $ 300 I now have a sweet running but very stiff 1983 Johnson (engine) lol. Thank you again for the help
