still missing

I put a NEW pump on this morning (forget the old one) and it's still missing. I know it needed a new pump anyway so no big deal.

it idles up (roughly) and then sputters back down, up and down up and down.

i pulled the plug wires off one at a time and it didn't make a lot of difference on the top, maybe a little on the top but it died when i pulled the bottom. i noticed some good electricity through the pliers when i pulled the plug wires like a little tingle in the fingers.

any advice before i pull the top off the visualize the coils, or can i test them without pulling the top off?

i'm having a great time learning and working on this motor, but i would love to get out on the lake too.

thanks

Re: still missing

If not the coil, maybe the spark plug wire arcing through where it is clamped to the bottom of the armature plate. Just a tiny pin hole.

Re: still missing

i've ordered new plug wires and carb kit. do i still have to pull the flywheel off just for spark plug wire replacement, or is there an easier way?

on a side note, when i run my motor in a tank, there is a fair amount of oily substance (oil i'm sure), golden colored, floating in the water. Is this from the gas? remember the motor is sputtering some, so maybe the gas/oil is not all being burned and comming through the exhaust.

Yup, you have to remove the flywheel. It's no big deal, just use a harmonic balancer type puller only. Oil in the test tank is normal, not all of the oil in the fuel gets burned. It ends up in the exhaust and then into the test tank.

have not tested compression. i guess it would be a good time to do it. what should it be at?

btw, i read 2 posts, one of them saying to torque at 105fp, and another one saying that was too much. is my 25hp torqued at 105?
