Stinger Johnson 85hp

Anyone have any input on this engine? I have the chance to buy a whaler with it on it. I don't know about it's relibility. What years they made them.

The Stingers were 3-cylinder models, which were never offered in an 85hp. They started as a 65 (1973), were bumped to 70 (1974) and eventually topped out at 75hp (1976-1981). There was a non-commercially available racing Stinger in a V4 in the early 1970s, but it was never offered to the public...<br />- Scott

That was a Strangler. That came out about the time OMC hired Charlie Strang from Merc. <br /><br />Coincidence? Hummm.......

Evinrudes hot V4 racer was the Strangler... Johnson's version was the Stinger as used in the Havasau races, etc...<br />- Scott

No matter wht the year or "reputation", have a marine mechanic check it out befor you turn your wallet upside down.
