Done so i don't hijack a antifreeze thread. I store my boat inside at a constant 50 degree and 40% relative humidty. I have an 07 Volvo Penta 5.0 GXI-G engines. I run antifreeze through them just for the old reason of to prevent corrision not for freeze prevention. I heard on the newer motors that the corrision isn't an issue. I boat in fresh water. Is there any truth to this?

Whoops, maybe this should have been on the Volvo Penta forum. Sorry. Mod please move.

Re: Storing inside

Corrosion wasn't a problem in older engine either, in fresh water. It's the salt water that was the problem, and not flushing. Then with the invention of things like Salt-A-Way with the flushing attachment it was about the same as running in fresh water all the time. A light layer of surface rust developed over the winter sure isn't going to affect how long an engine lives. Look at all the old boats with good running engines that have never been a problem.
It's only the internet and the DIYers that turned using antifreeze in the engine over the winter a big deal. The engines do fine with just draining.

Thank's Don, for the quick response. Guess i'll save some money next season, no antifreeze. Enjoy reading your responses.

Ayuh,... I store Dry,... Air don't freeze,...
I've got a few 40, maybe 50 year old motors, with their original manifolds, that don't look over a season old...

Even in yer temp controlled garage, I'd Drain yer motor...

1 bad storm could cost you dearly otherwise....

I just ran antifreeze through because the older GM blocks used to have a corrosion problem. (Old school).
I drain the water. The boat is stored in old salt mines that have been reconditioned for storage. the Gov stores records there.Pepsi Cola stores there pop in there also. I know, the first thing you think of is oh my, salt? It isn't like that.Walls have been sealed and the floor is concrete. Been storing there for years. What is nice is no wrap and detailed winterizing. In the spring it is ready to go. It can snow or rain all it wants and the only thing that will damage it is if the mountain falls in.
