It's an old game and was started long before technology arrived. The "personalities" involved are what makes it somewhat interesting.

I'm sure if we wanted to, we could completely remove the players and still have a game. The outcome could be determined by the same computers that pick lottery numbers.

I am going to have to watch as close as you have JB. One thing that is not well understood is that the ball is considered a strike if it "paints" the strike zone i.e. 99.999% of ball out side of the zone. Can you really see that .001% as it crosses the plate? I am not saying that an umpire can, but he can kinda be consistent . . .

I don't understand how some people insist that a game is "fair" when inaccuracies (erroneous calls) are protected. That is not a contest, it is chaos.

The game is only "fair" when all events are evaluated accurately or as accurately as possible. "No replay" protects ERRORS, but this is not about replay or no replay, it is about accurately identifying whether a pitch is a strike (in or touching the strike zone rectangle) or a ball (not in or touching) when it crosses the plate.

A few pitches will tell an observer that the umpire cannot do that accurately or even consistently. That cheats both the pitcher and the batter of truth. They deserve better.

JB what you are talking about is very....sterile. I am NOT a MLB fan. I'd rather watch paint dry, or watch grass grow.
But bad umping is part of the game, always has been. It's an adjustment teams have to make to win.
I don't feel it cheats anybody. I'm sure the umps do the best they can, you can't expect more out of a human, we make mistakes. If you want better, replace them with a machine. Don't second guess the ump.
How long do you want a game to take? Are you going to allow coaches or team managers to challenge every pitch they don't agree with? A game will take FOREVER! Are you going to sit through literally HOURS of reviews per season? Your "pitch tracker" is gonna have them second guessing themselves and most likely cause more bad calls.

Perfect example is all the flags thrown in the NFL this year that have been picked up and deemed "no infraction". The ref throws the flag and after a conference, i'd put money on it's second guessed and deemed "no infraction". The replay officiating isn't helping the game at all.

I rarely disagree with JB, however.

The key word is; "game". Humans against humans, foibles, mistakes, etc., included. Second guessing has always been a passtime.

I look at it as: "We weren't there".

Leave the human sports to the humans, there are plenty of electronic games, accuracy debatable, for us to play. Nothing is perfect when you swim in the human genepool.

The game can be flawed and fair, adding a twist that makes each game unique.

I'm with JB on this one. In any sport, if any technology can take out human error in judgement calls, then the sport should use it.
Think about football before instant replay. Teams lost games by a TD when they actually got one fair and square because a ref said a player "stepped out of bounds", when replay clearly show's he did not. To many countless plays like that in the history of sports is what makes it rotten.
Shame on baseball for not keeping up with the times.

There is on thing we can all rest assured with I think that is comforting.

And that is, that none of these umpires can credibly be accused of using performance enhancing drugs.
