What was supposed to be an overnight trip turned into 2 1/2 days on South Bass. Honkin winds in the 20 MPH range whipped up the lake to the point where it wasn't safe to head back to our launch point until 9 this morning. A couple of minor problems...my fender ripped so last night was an interesting repetition as the rub rail repeatedly slammed against the dock. Amazing how much noise that makes in the cabin. I tried to fix it at 4am but wasn't able and didn't have the patience.
Finally got the all clear at 9am only to find that my 15yo daughter and her friend has unplugged the battery charger and plugged in iPhones, iPods etc. This while running the stereo all night. Result...dead batteries. Fortunately for me a nice couple from Michigan in a 27' Commodore had a spare starting battery. Saved by the generosity of strangers. Was able to get started using their battery, unhooked and replaced mine, and off we went. It looked like a jailbreak with all the boats leaving the bay after being couped up for 2 days.
I learned that it's never just an overnight trip when it comes to Lake Erie. I could have been more prepared.
