Strange happenings with my electric system.

There seems to be an odd sort of delay in between applying a device and its response. For instance, I tried to tilt my engine out of the water and pressed the button to do so and for the first few seconds there was no response but eventually it lifted. Then today I tried to start the engine, the same type of thing happened. I turned the key and got nothing, but held the key in the start position and it eventually kicked. This has also happened with various lights on the boat. Im very much in the dark about electricity. To anyone who can explain this to me in the most basic language, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Howdy, Patrolcarr.

I suspect one or more poor connections in your battery and ground cables.

I would disconnect, clean and reconnect all connections of the big cables to and from the battery. Special attention goes to the battery ground cable where it connects to the engine block.

Good luck. :)

Hi patrolcarr, JB is right on with the answer. Here's what seems to be happening, you have a loose connection, when you try to draw current through it the connection point gets hot, this takes a bit of time which explains the time delay, the metal expands until you have a decent connection and then the system works. :)
