Re: Strange Spark Condition

to mean it seems like what happened when the tach was shorting out and the wire from the tach was shorting out the coil. Seems ot me like something is shorting the tach wire or the 12v supply to coil

You should have a lanyard on the dash or at the control box. If you can access the wires (purple w/white tracers) bypass the kill switch somehow. Try it again. What are you doing when it dies? In the boat or are you by the engine or dash?
And by the way, if you had a short, you'd be changing fuses!

Is there an hour meter wired to the tach? That would be roughly 5-6 minutes. But it start right back up.

Re: Strange Spark Condition

Try this.

hook a jumper wire from the battery + terminal to the + terminal on the coil, start the engine normally and let it run for a minute or two. Shut off the key (it will keep running) then disconnect the jumper wire, now it will stop. You had the helm ignition wiring bypassed.
Now, hook the jumper wire back up, hit the key, and see if it starts up.

Great idea Don, if that doesn't work and you run it again feel the coil if it's hot? I've seen a coil overheat cut out and then work again after it cools.
