"Strong" steering wheel

[U.S.S. Too Tall]

Like every other one of my post starts, I have a 1979 Caprice. To my knowledge, everything on her is original. Under slow speeds, the wheel is tight, had to fight it a little to weave through the people crowding the launch. Cruising speeds, it seemed ok, a little touchy maybe, but i didnt have to fight it. Do I need to lube the steering? How would I go about doing this?

Gotta assume you have a rotary teleflex or similar. cable. Not the old style pulley system. The first thing I'd do is disconnect the linkage bar at the motor.

Second, Loosen the big nut at the end of the flexible cable. Then see if you can slide the metal end of the cable out of the horizontal tube on the motor(tilt tube)
Lastly, squirt some good quality marine grease into the tilt tube. Mercury makes a good anti corrosion that works well Three pumps out of a grease gun in plenty.
if you have something else you need help, post a photo or two. Takes a lot of guesswork out, and we can be more specific.

EdC, thank you for the reply. I did make a mistake though. I didnt start my post 100% complete. I have a 1979 Caprice I/O 140 hp. I do not know if that changes the steering linkage at the motor? The pictures did help me to understand about what I should be lookin for. Again, sorry that I was not clear on what I am working with. I do believe that I have a rotary system though. I will double check tomorrow. Tomorrow will be a working on the boat day!!
