I have spent my summer restoring a 1975 MFG Carefree 14. I thought i would be on the water by now, but i know now the boat wont be ready till next spring. I am now putting my attention to getting a 1959 Evinrude 35hp (Super Twin?), back into sevice. When i puchased the boat the seller told me you would have to handshift the motor. I could see that the shifter cable was way to long and needed proper hardware. After checking the motor over i have determined that the motor may be stuck do most likley do to improper storage. With the spark plugs removed (even if the motor was in gear), can the motor be turned over manualy? If the motor turns out to be stuck. What are my next steps? This outboard looks period correct on this boat, i would like to keep this boat/motor combo intact. Thanks in advance. Mitch

I would pull the head and see what kind of possible water damage there may be. Clean the cylinders up as good as you can, and soak the heck out of them with 50/50 acetone and ATF.

Also, double check that the issue is not in the gearbox - you can drop the lower unit and see if the motor frees up.

Personally, any motor that is "stuck" ought to be pulled down to the crankshaft so that all bearings and bearing surfaces can be inspected. Also, you're far less likely to break something if you pull it part than if you start hammering on piston tops and trying to turn the flywheel with a breaker bar...
