guys... i know someone out there has had this problem.

the anode just above my propeller on my Bravo One outdrive is stuck. i can fit a 13 mm or 1/2 inch socket over it but it won't budge. soaked it in WD40 overnight... no movement. bolt head is starting to strip on my sockets.

how do i get it out!? i want to get in the water and this is the last step!!!

WD-40 isn't the best penetrent, most use pb blaster, or something like it. I find 50-50 mix of acetone and atf works better than all of those.

A 1/2 inch socket (.500) is not the same as a 13mm (.512) socket.
Use the correct size socket and be sure it is a Six Point Socket.
A 12 pointer will take the corners off if it is super tight.
The 6 point socket is a well kept secret where Less Really is More!
A 6 point on a Breaker Bar, with a Cheater Pipe, will either turn it, or snap the head off.

You are going to be replacing the bolt in any event.

As willie posted. Six point socket. (minus the breaker Bar) Use either PB blaster Or marvel mystery oil,(which is my favorite), Soak the the heck out of it.
Then use a brass flat punch and smack the head of the bolt it with a hammer to shock it. Then try to tighten it first, then try loosen it.
Take it easy. the last thing you want to do is snap the bolt.

Electric impact gun would help if using the proper sockets as stated above.

I agree on the pb blaster it works great. You may also want to look into an impact driver. It's basically like a nut driver. You select tighten or loosen put a socket or bit driver on it and hit it with a hammer. Works on the same principle as an air impact gun on a smaller scale. You can pick them up at an auto parts store hardware store or sears for cheap. Just be careful not to dent or crack the hull.

+1 on the impact driver.

It's also handy to loosen lower unit fill and drain screws.

PB blaster or kroil.

with the 6-point socket and a 6" extension on the bolt, smack the extension a few times with a ball-peen hammer. then use the breaker bar. the impact of the hammer puts a bit of vibration into the threaded joint to allow the penetrating oil to wick in.

Re: stuck over-propeller anode

If my Bravo outdrive pulled this sort of crap with me, and the impact wrench did not do the trick (or was not available) . . . I'd do this type of thing to it . . .

I'd drill a hole in the anode right next to the bolt, thus exposing the threads a bit so the PB Blaster can get right into the threads. Of course, if the outdrive is off the boat it is a lot easier to do, 'cuz you can turn the outdrive upside down. It should still be do-able if the outdrive is on the boat and you have to drill upward.

Re: stuck over-propeller anode

Was there myself, a couple of weeks ago, trying to pull my lower off. I used heat, a propane torch to the anode, in the middle. Since this is not steel, I didn't think the use of acetylene was warranted. The propane torch heated it enough to shock the metal and it came loose pretty easily.
Heat is an excellent solution if you can use it without causing damage to nearby components, such as wood, rubber or plastic.

Re: stuck over-propeller anode

BINGO! thanks to everyone that offered ideas and tips. here's what i did:

sprayed it down twice with pb blaster (the only thing my hardware store had). then got a manual impact driver and tapped it in tighten mode a couple times. then reversed it to lossen and tapped it a bunch more times. used the 6 sided socket the whole time, continued with wrench and it came off pretty easy after that! for some reason the bolt had red(!) lock-tight on it! i put blue on the new one.

thanks to all you guys that took the time to get me going with this. you are all a valuable asset to this forum.
