what is the best way to pull off a (1988 200 hp merc)powerhead? powerhead is stuck, all the bolts are loose, tried to lift with merc lifting ring and fork lift but she won't budge(lifted rear of boat off trailer). tried penetrating oil haven't tried the heat yet. Any suggestions would be appreciated? thanks

Re: stuck powerhead

Often the long powerhead bolts rust up and get stuck in the top of the driveshaft housing. Have you got any movement at all? If so, you may be able to get some penetrating oil in, or a hacksaw and cut the bolts.

Are you sure ALL the nuts are off. There are a couple right up the front, virtually under the carbs.

Chris.........

Re: stuck powerhead

It's kinda hard to get a nice straingt pull. Always seems to **** on the studs and the driveshaft. It's easier if the lower unit is off. You'll want it off anyhow. New powerhead, new water pump. Period! Not just the impeller. The whole dang thing! No matter how good it looks. If you want that new powerhead to be covered under warranty if it fails, you gotta do it. That and it just makes sense. (If that's why you're pulling it.)

Addendum:
That **** was censored by software. Think of a four letter word beginning with C that means Rooster. I wonder if it would censor a four letter word beginning with D that means Richard. Well, I'm the adventurous type. Let's give it a try...

**** !

Re: stuck powerhead

Assuming you have all the bolts off of the powerhead to drive shaft housing, go ahead and remove the lower unit... This may be a b*@@$ also, but this will allow the driveshaft to be freed from the head... This may be your problem... Once that is finished, try side to side pressure, pushing on the top of the powerhead (carefully) in the port/starboard direction. Going straight up, will cause you the most resistance if seized.

Re: stuck powerhead

I'm pulling it because i must of leaned out #2 on the way in from dolphin fishing . she shut down so i let her cool off and she started back up i idled the rest of the way in. At home i did a compression test and all were about 130-120 range except a 90 from #2. So I pulled the head on that side and found the #2 piston exhaust side was melted down to the ring. cyl walls looked good and no broken pieces so hopefully its just the piston. at worst case it will need a sleeve.

Re: stuck powerhead

Try doing like I suggested without heat first! Especially if you think the head is salvageable...

But hook up the winch to the lifting eye before trying side to side force... I don't want it to fall off and land on the garage floor... You can push as hard as you want as long as you don't damage any other components... You'll get the hang of it, just start carefully...

Re: stuck powerhead

The driveshaft/crankshaft must be aligned straight up and down and you gotta lift it straight up. If not, the studs and splines will bind and it won't come off.

c/6
Hooty
