your right PFB as confusing as it may be... They are not alike terms, and therefore you cannot subtract the same variable from both sides. how bout this:<br />3 men get a hotel room. The owner charges $10 a person for their room. Thats $30. He decides that is a bit steep so he takes $5 and gives it to his son to divy up between the three men. 30-5=25. The son gives each man one dollar and keeps two for himself. 1+1+1+2=5. now...since each man got one dollar back, we can say that they each payed $9 instead of ten. so 9+9+9=27 plus the two dollars that the kid kept, 27+2=29. wheres the missing dollar?!?!<br />Craig

With the refund the men spent $25 dollars for the room plus the $3 they got back = $28 dollars plus the two that the boy kept makes $30.

nope. The men each got a dollar back so their refund to them was only 3 so they did pay 9 each or 27, plus the two that the kid kept is only 29... comon wheres the missing dollar?

The facts in this riddle are clear: There is an initial $30 charge. It should have been $25, so $5 must be returned and accounted for. $3 is given to the 3 friends, $2 is kept by the bellhop - there you have the $5. The trick to this riddle is that the addition and subtraction are done at the wrong times to misdirect your thinking - and quite successfully for most. Each of the 3 friends did indeed pay $9, not $10, and as far as the friends are concerned, they paid $27 for the night. But we know that the clerk will tell us that they were charged only $25 and when you add the $3 returned with the $2 kept by the bellhop, you come up with $30.

It's not missing all money is present and accounted for. If each man had paid $9 originally it would have equalled $27 but they did not they paid $10 and that is $30 now a refund of $5 brings the total paid to the owner to $25 each man gets $1 which totals $3 and the boy keeps $2 and $3+$2=$5. The refund was not split equally and thus it looks as if money is missing if you start trying to figure the refund back into what was paid. Each man should have gotten back $1.66 repeating Which kind of is hard to do as $.01 is the smallest unit of measurment for money. In effect one friend gets back $1.66 and two get back $1.67 when added up equals $5. What the son kept was .66 from one guy and .67 from the other two. This is where Accounting comes into play.

mike17 has it down. they simply added two when it should have been a three, or subtracting two, but not adding. simply throwing you off, as much as i hate riddles for confusing me, i can never seem to not let it get to me! i suppose if it doesnt kill you, its good for you <br />Craig
