Stupid Question but a question never the less

I have a 1989 Johnson 28hp spl, I do not have a tachometer installed on this boat. i need to do some work to the timing and do a link and sink, my manual will be here tomorrow morning...

How can i get a reading of my rpms without a tach. i have a metter that has a clamp to go on a spark plug. it has 2 settings RPM and RPMx10, i know how to use this but im not sure if this will give me an accurate reading on a 2 stroke.

Any Suggestions?

I know this sounds dumb but im really only used to working on 4 strokes.

Some inductive tach's will work on both 2 and 4 strokes, some only 4 in which case you need to divide by 2. Read the manual that came with, if not , google the tach and check out the specs.
