what would i use to mount an island type seat in my carolina skiff, making it out of marine grade ply wood and then laying it up with glass. but i don't want to fiberglass it in the boat incase i ever wanna take it out. so basically i wanna know what the marinas use to glue in the center consoles and what not when they customize your skiff.

Re: stupid question

I would build it as a separate box and use stainless angle brackets to hold it to the deck. Hide the brackets inside the box.

Hinge the seat so you can use the box for storage.

If you want it to be waterproof, use a rubber gasket under the sides before you screw it down, and caulk the deck. If you don't care if it's waterproof, use some washers to lift it off the deck so the water can drain.

It's not a stupid question cause you are trying to make a decision, so it's a smart one. lol

Think screws, not glue. Use silicone to waterproof. In this way, you can remove it.

Good luck.

There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers. These are good answers. Using a little silicone on the screw threads keep them from loosening, but still easy to remove if necessary.

Re: stupid question

Normally a Marina will use stainless steel screws, l brackets and sealant. 3m5200 is permanent and 3m4200 is for things that may have to be removed in the future. Avoid silicone which never lasts a season under marine conditions. moving to resto

Re: stupid question

definitley stainless steel and nothing less. they cost a little more but worth it when the fasteners don't rust on you. good luck and if you have any more "stupid questions" the guys are here for you.:)

Re: stupid question

It's not a stupid question because I never put thought into wether I want it water proof or not. So you helped me out by asking the question.
