Gennerally I'm not the one for forwarded activisim. However, after reading this, this may have some merit. Take this as you would any activist action. I do not support or condone the action but since I do not support the major oil companies now I'm already doing this.

I place this here more for your edification and feedback...........................................................................................

Subject: Fw: Gas Prices High??!!! Let's Boycott.. please read.> >> >> >> >> I hear we are going to hit close to $3.00 a gallon by the summer. Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action. Phillip Hollsworth, offered this good idea:.
This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day"> >campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just> >laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt"ourselves by refusing to buy gas.> It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem> >for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read it and join with us!>

By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about$1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $1.97 for regular unleaded inmy town, Jersey City. NJ Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50-$1.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERScontrol> >the marketplace....not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more> >each day, we consumers need to take action The only way we are going tosee> >the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not> >purchasing their gas! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.
Here'sthe idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they> >reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't whimp out on me atthis point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!! I am sending this note to about thirty people. If each ofyou send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300) ... and those 300 send it toat> >least ten> > more (300 x 10 = 3,000)...and so on, by the time the message> >reaches the> > sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE> >MILLION> > consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on> >to ten> > friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted!> >If it goes> > one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION> >PEOPLE!!!> > Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's> >all (If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all youhave> >to do is send> > this to 10 people.... Well, let's face it, you just aren't a mathematician. But I am .. so trust me on this one.) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLIONpeople> >could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you I> >didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting togetherwe> >can make a difference.
If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES> > TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK.> >

Boatingfool, Just filled up for $1.49 gal. at mom and pop station. Exxon across the street is $1.57 gal for regular. What really irritates me is that from where I work the nearest exxon refinery is about 25 miles as the crow flys about 40 miles driving. So don't give me the bull about transportation cost. I can actually get gas cheaper in Pa then Jersey if I just compare name brand stations.

Yep, big Marathon/Ashland refinery not 4 miles from me, but can drive 20 miles to the west and get it 10 cents cheaper on the gallon.

I know that the time, energy and passion expressed against legal businesses whould be more productive if directed toward government, taxes, regulations, fines, fees etc. Your fighting the wrong battle, IMO.

Re: Subject: Fw: Gas Prices High??!!

Another technique may be to stop buying huge gas guzzeling SUVs that for most families do nothing more than a good Subaru or equivelant would do, or if you insist on such a vehicle, drive it less. The fuel consumption in this country goes up at least 10% each year, and it is no coincidence that large fuel sucking vehicles are what is in right now. Unfortunately, my own household is no exception. I have a truck, and the better half has a Jeep Grand Cherokee she bought back in the mid 90s. She didn't buy that Jeep because she needed a rugged 4 wheel drive to get to the back woods, she bought it because that is what she percieved as the vehicle a person should have. She would love to get rid of it now and get a more efficient vehicle, but we don't have the money. We compensate by planning our trips to town, maximizing time to minimize fuel consumption.

We need to own some of this problem, we are the ones flocking to the gas pumps every other day. Why shouldn't they charge what they want, they know we will still buy it. It is no different than cigarette prices. Tobacco prices are outrageous, yet the consumer still buys, because they are addicted and feel they have no choice. Boycotting certain companies and having no buy days will do nothing. They will just raise prices more to compensate for a lack of demand, and then we will suffer worse. The things we buy will cost more because it cost more to be shipped. No matter what, we are screwed. All we can do is just try to be more efficient with our own personal usage, things will probably get worse. In the end we will end up like Europe where the gas is expensive and everyone drives tiny vehicles....

The price breakdown goes something like this on $1.60 a gallon.

Station get's 50% or $.80

Oil company gets $.80 divided accordingly, $.40 to the executives $.10 to the trucker and $.30 to the shareholder.

Can anybody say OPEC.

I don't know but I would be willing to bet the oil co's make less than a penny a gallon.

I now locally the gas stations earn between 3 & 5 cents per gallon before overhead and expenses and any three cents off coupons.

If you take a 20 gallon fillup thats a profit of between .60 and 1.00, then the customer whips out his handy dandy checkcard of wich the bank charges 3.5% processing on a $32 doller sale wich amounts to $1.12 or a loss on the customer unless he buys 20oz soda or a water.

Don't believe it? ask any filling station owner.

I have a friend who owns one, He makes more on 1 pop than on a fillup, even on a cash sale.

Sorry jg,...Didn't mean to rip you, just seems like the author has a rather idealistic view of things. ;)

neumanns,
Do you folks in MN not pay any taxes on gasoline? Here in CA it's close to $.40 per gallon, so those figures would not work here.

The suggested boycott is an attempt to hurt the pocket books of the major oil companies, not the individual station owners. Whether it will work is another story.

Thanks SBN.

Glad I'm not the only one who won't buy an import!

And by the way, I do drive a SUV with a V-8, and I don't get gas every other day like Jason states.

I usually get 2 to 3 weeks, on a 30 gallon tank of gas!!!

So do my freinds, who own SUV's!

I don't know anyone who gets gas every other day, including a freind who uses his SUV for highway work, 6 days a week.

He only gets gas once a week and hardly ever shuts the engine off, especially in this frigid weather!

People need to stop believing everything they read in the libral news, and research the facts!

n/p KKC, the Japs have cost us to much the way it is, and this goes back a long way, so I try to do what I can to keep Americans working by not buying the other stuff.

edit: BTW, the gas companies charge what they want.
It is all about the all mighty dollar as usual.

The big companies can hold out longer than you can go without gas.

Re: Subject: Fw: Gas Prices High??!!

Kenny, I was exagerating a bit on the every other day thing, but you know what I mean. :D

SBN, Jeeps get horrid economy for their size. I get better fuel economy in my F150 4x4 with 351 than my better halfs 4.0 Grand Cherokee. She has the spiffy economy indicator on the computer display and it does not look good. I get consistent 18 mpg while she gets 14 to 16 mpg. The V8 Jeeps actually get better economy. The one thing I will say though is that since the rig is paid for, it is only gas and insurance that goes into it. I miss my little Suzuki I had when I go to the fuel pump, but thats the only time I miss it. I do like being able to tow and haul loads, but there are a lot of people that buy rigs but do not use them for what they are intended, which is the point I was trying to make. Just how big of an engine do you need to pick the kids up at school? Its ridiculous to see a woman driving along in a fullsize Suburban with two kids in it. They buy them because their neighbor bought one, not because they need it. I know everyone wants to defend their right to be wasteful, but c'mon, lets get real...Unless you tow a trailer and/or have a platoon of kids, you are being wasteful for no other reason than to want to be just like the Jones's....

Re: Subject: Fw: Gas Prices High??!!

How does the oil market work? I heard once that the gas at an Exxon comes from the same place that gas from Texaco comes from and so on... which would mean that the same company is using different branding labels and that there really is no way to divert our money away from the big players. This is common in many industries.

I'd love to participate in this, the only place my family gets gas is at Safeway or Costco, but where does that fuel come from?

Re: Subject: Fw: Gas Prices High??!!

Only one minor flaw...

Gas is made from oil, and oil is a commodity.

The only thing that will lower the price on a commodity is decreasing demand or increasing supply.

OPEC and a couple of others set the supply, the USA sets the demand.

The only real soution is drive more efficient cars, and use less energy overall.

FYI, think about how stable gas prices are over the last 20 years compared to inflation. They probably ranged from one dolar to two dollars. We are lucky to be paying 1.50 per gallon.

Ken
