Re: Subject: Fw: Gas Prices High??!!

I run a gas station/c-store. The margin on a gallon of fuel is hefty. The taxes in NY on a gallon of fuel are hefty. We subsidize a large metro public transportation system even though I have never set foot on a subway train. Even though oil is a commodity and the price per barrel is set on supply and demand the price on the street IS affected by consumers. My company sends me E-Mails as to what my prices should be based on what I report as competitors prices on my market map(four different brand stations within 5 miles). When they go down, we go down. When they go up, we go up. Just one days lag on the movement of 2 cents has a dramatic effect on my sales volume. The consumer is acutely aware of the difference in price between brands. As prices go up the sales in my store go down. The fella with a $20 used to put $18 in the tank and then come get a coffe and donut. Now, $20 goes in the tank and he brings a thermos to work and the tank isn't even full. I do believe that boycotting the majors will force them down and then the mids and smallers will follow. And yes sometimes Mobil buys fuel from our tanks and retails 5-6 cents/gal. higher or we buy from them and sell at lower retail but from what I understand that's borne out of necessity not habit. As for the smaller un-branded stations I really don't know where they get their gas. I t all angers me too because I pay the same as you for a fill-up but I don't get paid more for raising the price. It hurts me doubly because I'm rated on my inside sales of coffree, donuts, chips, etc... and they go down when fuel goes up. Hope this helps. Those who say the consumer has no power are those who fear the power.

Niel, You say the margin is hefty (Is this the refiner) on a gallon...What is your best informed estimate. I always "suspected" it was low and the money was in volume. Also do you have any guess as to what your wholsaler is making?

Sounds to me that maybe it's a good time to break out my matter/anti-matter transporter device?

LOL!

Only if life was more like Star Trek! :D

I've often wondered if somehow we could organize a giant sit-out of gasoline for a week.
A couple of days of the entire USA not buying gas? That would definitely get someone's attention.

H.

Gas prices here are $169.09 per gallon.
As long as they don't treat us like California I'm happy.
Also I get a little pi$$ed when americans tell americans that in Europe they pay 4-5 bucks per gallon. Who cares what they pay

And while we are on this subject. Some of you may be a little to young. BUUUUT do you all remember the ALASKEN pipe line??? You know the oil that we "AMERICANS" don't get one drop of. I was paying .25 cents for gas in the early 70's Well in the 60s the oil congladmerants wanted to build a pipe line in Alaska. The enviromentalist said no, so congress said no! well in the early 70s a gas shortage was a reality. Gas prices short up to a dollar per gallon.
Sure enough congress approved the pipe line.
Now these same companies want to build a big natural pipe line through Alaska. Better watch out if congress does not pass the bill gas will become a shortage here on the East coast and prices will go up .And if you notice they have already started a shortage.

Yea when I first got my license to drive, I think I paid somewhere around 25 cents a gallon for gas the first time and did not know then how I could afford that price.

.25 then and 5 bucks would fill your tank in them days. And luckily when the gas shortage came with cars in line waiting for gas and being refused.Luckily for me a couple of friends owned gas stations and if they knew you they would put a special decal on your bumper and youcould get all the gas you wanted. Those were the days when you got your gas; tires; oil change and mechanic work done at the same place.
Our first Mac Donalds which we traveled 15 miles to was .35 cents for a buger & fries

35 cents for a BUGER and FRIES?!? You spelled FLIES wrong!!!

The only people who would benefit from increased oil drilling in Alaska are the oil companies who aquire the rights. Alaska's oil is a drop in the bucket compared to what we are importing from the Mideast DAILY. It wouldn't change our prices or self-reliance a bit and we'd end up with a superfund site (or several) to pay for. Use up the abundant oil from the Mideast while it's cheap (and it IS cheap) and lets save our precious little for when we really need it and appreciate it.

...buger and fries... :D

Neumanns - at the retail level. The company I work for is an independent oil company and they drill and refine their own product. The margin is figured from a "cost at market" or what I believe is the cost from well to dispenser. The margins I've seen in the past year have been from .10 to .20+ per gallon. To me that's hefty considering an average monthly volume of 200,000 gls

I honestly dont think there is a such thing as "hefty" profit. That profit pays for a lot of peoples salaries and stockholders dividens. I somtimes question the "hefty" profit on a 20 oz coke that you pay the same price for a 2 liter at the grocery store.

I suggest that all of you guys talking about gas that was 25 cents a gallon, think about how much of the increase is in taxes, and also think about how much your salary was back then, and also how much everything else cost. Your 25 cents a gallon has increased 6 times to 1.50. Your average car has increased about 10 times, your food, etc, etc.

Ken

Interesting niel,...I will have to think on that for a while. I havent decided if 10-20/gal is hefty from well to pump, sure is some food for thought though thanks.

I just noticed this morning that the gas prices here have topped the $2.00 mark. I need a smaller vehicle. My '97 Ford F150 xcab is giving me only about 13 mpg. :(

Hey Jason,
I agree with your observations. I too own a F150. What I want to know is how you are getting 18 mpg. I'd love to get that kind of milage.
-Joe
