Suggestions on fixing this???

I need some ideas on how to go about fixing this. The dark green circles are the drain holes.
1. Blue lines should I cut them and grind them flush or use them to tie into the new skin?
2.Yellow line should I just remove what's left of the old transom skin here and tie it into the stringers?
3. Green line should I cut it back to here and then try to tie it into the new transom skin?
4. Should I build my own bilge area or just leave the old drainage intact?
5. What would be the pros and cons to adding a layer of glass to each of those stringers? Is it a waste of money and time?

I would defenitly cut back to the blue lines and gring it smooth to the sides of the hole. I would also sand the sides and bottom back to bare fiberglass a little forward of were the transom will be so you have good clean glass to bond to when installing the new transom. As for the holes you could taper in the holes at the outer skin and build them back up with mat and sand them smooth. Here is pic of how I prepped mine before starting to rebuild the transom. I cut my strangers about 18" up from the transom, but they need to be replaced anyway.

You can see how I sanded all of the white gelcoat down to bare glass

hi.....do it like berry did....use his pics as a guide.......everything must be sanded/ground.rough and scuffed.

to make it simple........get it all out of the way......everything.

all the drain holes that arre currently in the skin....you will need those to bolt the new transom to.....

as far as adding glass to the stringers.....see my last comment on your other thread.....you really have to see what is beneath the stringers......

but you would waist your time and materials to add glass to them.

cheers

Oh ok so what ever I take out can be rebuilt and would be easier to work in that area with that stuff removed. I'm pretty sure that the stringers are all fiberglass but I will make sure. I read the Mustangs after 65 had all glass stringers no wood. More than likely why there are soooo many!
Thanks Berry and Ooops!

Re: Suggestions on fixing this???

Well I cut those sections back about 8"s to see what I could find and to give me more room while working on the transom. What I found was more wet foam!! So now what?
1. Do I cut the stringer tops off and insert a layer of the pink foam? (I planned to use this for the other sections that had foam.)
2. Or should I try and get some wood in there? Either case I'll be glassing back over the top correct?
3. Should I use the pieces I cut off and glass over them?

Since you're in there you definetly want all that wet foam out. Maybe checkout some of the rebuilds at classicaquasport.com. They have very similar stringer systems. I believe some cut sections of the top off, dug out the old wet foam, poured new foam in, trimmed flush, and glassed back over the tops. I'd probally wait to do the stringers until after the transom was in.

Yes there was no doubt that I was getting that foam out!! I've spent all this time making sure nothing wet was left in the boat I wasn't gonna start overlooking things now LOL. So I checked out that site and found what your talking about. Looks like a good plan and not to hard. Like you said it's time to get started on that transom. Thanks again for the input and I've been watching your thread closely.

I'm planning on putting my transom together as follows. Anyone see any issues in doing it this way?

I don't suppose there's anything wrong with using PL Premium (I installed my deck with it). I just don't see the benefit of using it in your application.

I didn't read the thread completely so excuse me if it's already been stated but way are you only making your transom 1" thick?

I think 6 layers of 1708 is way excessive?

IMO, if you are going to use PL Premo to glue the wood together, then exclude the glass and glue wood to wood. 1708 uses up the resin which is costly not to mention added weight to the boat.

Re: Suggestions on fixing this???

I'll have to agree with bigredinohio. If you're going with the PL, then save the glass and resin for else were (that stuff is not cheap) and use two pieces of 3/4" or three pieces of 1/2" laminated with the PL alone. This way the wood will make up a solid 1 1/2" transom. I have not had a chance to pick up my wood yet, but this is the way mine will most likely be done.

Re: Suggestions on fixing this???

OH Geez! Typo on the wood it's suppose to be 3/4" I'm a bonehead! So the total would be 1 1/2" transom.
Oh great! I thought the inside wood needed some kind of coat of resin/mat. So just glue the darn thing together sounds good to me! The back transom skin is in good shape no delam or anything. Do you think I still need a layer on it like berry's?

Re: Suggestions on fixing this???

I had alot of delamination on my transom skin that I had to remove. Thats why you see mine being built back up. I built it back to original and just added one layer of 1808 for the hell of it. Everything looks good in your diagram. The only thing you might want to change is the layers of 1708 between the outer skin and transom. Like oops suggested in my thread you will want to bond to csm, not the 1708. So you could either add that to 1708 or maybe just replace the 1708 in that area with the CSM. I will be adding a layer to the 1808 on my transom skin, but am holding off untill I get the transom core ready to go in.

What size boat and motor do you have? I am assuming you're using poly resin?

Yes I've decided to go with the poly resin. My boat is a 14' Crestliner and the motor is a 50HP Force.

Re: Suggestions on fixing this???

Glue 2 - 3/4" ply together with PL Premo
Coat the the wood with resin twice. On the third, add csm
Bed the transom into skin in PL Premo
Fillet (round) the edges with PL Premo
Tab with a strip of 1708 (cloth would be better)
Then add 1-2 layers of 1708

That should be more then enough for what you have. I'm pretty sure you can make pb with poly so you could fillet with pb instead.
