I am the proud owner of a 1997 Sunbird Spirit 170 and have a question about the steering wheel. This boat has a 90 HP Johnson Outboard. Under the steering wheel housing, there is a round knob. This knob will turn and tighten, or turn the other direction and become loose,, but I can't see what is actually happening. Any ideas on what this is supposed to do?
Other than that, the boat is surprisingly spunky for it's size. A little small, but at least it runs!
Thanks for the help!

That knob should adjust the tension/amount of force needed to turn the wheel ;)

Exactly - it's a 'brake'. If it has never been used it may not work, but the idea is to hold the wheel for you.

thanks guys,,
but no, it doesn't work.. i guess i'll have to take it apart and see why.
so far the kids love the boat. it does pull them on the wakeboard and wakeskate, yet it is real light and easy to drive and maneuver. i think it's a keeper.
