I have been pricing supplies locally and had to come back to the forum for advice. product and price diversity forces me to ask...where is the best place to buy the right resin and what is the right resin? and the wrong resin?
I could spend hours researching specs on different brands and products just to choose one to spend hours searching for the best price/supplier.
i've heard terms...premium poly, boatyard resin, economy resin, gen purpose resin, resin with and w/o wax, vinyl ester...
i'm so confused! please steer my in the right direction or at least keep me from buying crap.

http://www.uscomposites.com/polyesters.html

You'll find as good a price here as there is most anywhere and very helpful people for answering questions. Their #435 resin is fine for most applications.

The waxed or unwaxed is just what it says, some has wax in it, which creates a top sealer so the resin can cure completly. You only use waxed resin for a final application (unless you wanted to sand the wax off)

Vinylester Resin has the same general chararistics as polyester, but just stronger. Most just use it for below the water line applications...it cost a bit more.

If you buy locally just tell them you're looking for general layup polyester resin, freshness is the key, when buying resin. If you buy it from a store that sells very little you really don't know how old it is. (6 month self life, as a rule)

Hope this helps a little.

Re: supply advice

thanks guys. i was pricing locally looking for cabosil and other products sold here. every supplier sells a different line/brand. makes comparison shopping difficult.
i am re-stringering and re-flooring a 14'6" '71 Glassmate tri-hull. it's not a priceless yacht so budget is a factor. was also trying to avoid an online purchase unless it cut the budget in half.
nice to know about the wax factor and the freshness...now i know to only buy more when i run out and not to buy a pail and save the leftovers.

In that case I would use "Laminating" resin and not GP ( general purpose )

As far were you get it from is up to you. I dont order out..just get my stuff from my local supplier. I understand price being an issue .. so just shop around :) .

PS. I personally Never use/buy wax in my resin .. Ever. If for some reason I need a tack free surface I Brush gel on ;) .
