New owner of a 94 Force 120hp engine. Bought from original owner who claims had fewer than 10hrs on it - I have no reason to doubt him - very clean.

Several issues I would like to address.

Difficult to restart if it doesnt start the first time. I sometimes have to trim the exhaust out of the water (releive backpressure) to get it to start.

Top RPM is 4200 - prop is 19pitch. I know this should run at about 5000. The boat and motor were originally packaged together. Is it safe to assume the marina that sold it matched the proper prop to the engine/boat? Am I running low power for some other reason?

Just recently I started experiencing a surging of the engine above idle speed but stops at 80%-100% throttle. I had the boat out about 10hrs of running before this occured and it was running ok other than problems mentioned above. The surging is power bursts of approx 0.5 second this continues indefinately.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

JAP, IMHO the easiest and cheapest place to start would be to rebuild the carb after a good soaking. It probably wouldn't hurt to get a fuel pump rebuild kit also. They should be available at NAPA for your engine or a Mercury dealer. If it's a '94 with only 10 hrs on it, there's got to be gunk in the fuel system.

I'm getting out of here also. Looking at Texas, Missouri, Nevada. This is no place to retire in.
