At our local Krogers store. A man pushed a grocery cart with 3 DVD players, about 50 dvd's, and some other items out of the store without paying for them. Two bagboys observed this guy ripping them off. The suspect swung at the one boy and the other boy took out his box cutter and sliced the thiefs tire of his car. Cops were called and arrested the thief and then put charges of aggrivated menacing and vandalism on one of the bagboys.

This thief would have got away if it wasn't for the bagboys. Also this thief was identifed by other store owners that had got ripped off. How much stuff would this crack head have stolen before he was caught. A cop can threaten at gun point, and flatten a persons tires with a spike strip and its okay.

Exactly what can a citizen do to apprehend a suspect without being arrested?

The local community have been flooding City Hall with phone calls to drop the charges on the bagboy, but haven't heard if they are or not.

To me since he caught a thief that was responsible for crimes across town, he should be given a reward!

Like I always say...

SHOOT TO KILL.

It ends all arguments.

But then again, the dirtbag you iced always seem to have a relative willing to sue.

"Ahhh..Only in America" The Land of the lawyers.

If you have information on who, what, or where to call to vindicate the store worker, please post it here! I'll call!

H.

SS I work in law enforcement every day and i know why they were charged but for what purpose it befalls me. You are right they should be commended not prosecuted but that is the district attorneys call not the officers on the call

If anything at least their employers should pay the ticket for them.

That's as bad as a burglar being able to sue YOU for hurting himself while he's stealing something off YOUR property.

What is wrong with this planet?

Shoot all the lawyers and ask questions later...

H.

Imagine this, Search of the suspects (thief) house shows that he has two brand new sets of tires! At least they were BFG/TA's.

The DA was on the local news. Said he has to follow procedure, but it is up to the judge on the penalty handed down to the Bagboy. Sounds like it will be very minimal, especially since he is a juvie!

I do my best to stay out of trouble. Don't mind the court system, but I hate dealing with attorneys! (even if they are working for me).....SS

Re: Suspect Caught by bagboys

On election day, it is often Hel1 making the decision who to vote for, as I do not often see what I consider a good choice. But in all elections, I use a system of dis-qualifiers, where-as through a matter of elimination I make my final decision. The first step in the elimination, is the question what/who is he/her. If an attourney/lawyer he automatically gets a -50% (minus 50%) right off. Before I will vote for a lawyer for "ANY" elective office, he/she must be very exceptional, the only one running, or all oponents are also lawyers.
:D :D

Re: Suspect Caught by bagboys

I'll probably get flamed, but here I go.

The bag boy was exactly WRONG for doing what he did (by attempting to apprehend the thieves)and there was probably a store policy to that effect.

My nephew is a Walgreen assistant manager and according to their store policy, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES, are normal store employees to attempt to apprehend or stop a shoplifter or armed robber.

Sure, it costs them (and us) money, but employees are not security guards, so the company knows that a lawsuit by an injured (or dead)employee will cost them much more.

Their policy is to let them walk and call police.

Like the first post stated, being the hero usually has a downside anymore.

Marty

Re: Suspect Caught by bagboys

Hmmmmmmmm I sort of agree with you marty :) You are right. The boys did break company policy.

But with our society allowing so called "Career Criminals", only benefits mainly attorneys. It burdens us Joe Citizens to pay taxes to house the thief, pay his public defender (because he does not possess a tax paying job), and pay higher prices to pay for merchandise shoplifted.

Lakeman you have one heck of a good point. I have always been taught (which is probably wrong)that our govenment is surpose to be people of our piers. If the govenment is practically all attorneys, then the Joe Citizens are not being represented fair and balanced.

Any way you look at it, no matter what crime it is, attorneys are involved. Joe Citizen stays uninvolved because he doesn't want sued. Then if he is sued who does it? an attorney! And then what do you do? You hire an attorney.

It would seem that if thieves knew they would get the crap beat out of them when they stole something, they wouldn't take the chance. Example: Such as states that allow Concealed Weapons and states that don't. Ones that do, the crime rate is lower  DUH!

But what can a person do? Nothing, sit back and watch.

Sorry for the ranting, it just eerks me.......SS

Re: Suspect Caught by bagboys

Fellows the law states that when the perpetrator is hold a weapon on you he is a direct threat to you so you can act accordingly. When the thief went outside he was no longer a threat to the store or employees so the bag boy became the attacker with that said he was prob done a favor by being charged as i would expect the judge will prob not do much to him but when the scum bag thief sues the store for damage done to him and car they will have a viable defense where as if he wasn't charged they wouldn't have a leg to stand on.
I know it is s ** ty but that is the way it is and will always will be
I don't like the way the law works sometimes but after all it is the best game in town.

Well put Bubbakat. Many of us here see things Black and white, I for one do. There is right and wrong but in this "polliticaly correct" world everything is gray. It sucks but I am not wise enought to fix the world problems and this small one is even hard for me to figure out. In my book you take my stuff I should be able to stop you how ever I need to. I dont steal, cheat or hurt anybody (intentionaly) and I believe I should have the RIGHT to protect me and mine. Sorry I get a bit worked up over criminals using the law to hurt the good guys.

M&A i totally (think i) understand you, and i hope all law-abiding citizens feel like you do...

i think what BK is giving us is the lowdown on the sad legislation for this scenario.

i'm glad he did give it to us, because at least i know now, that if i am in this situation i can beat the $hit outta the thief, only as long as the thief charges the store from whence he stole, and not you personally.... did i get that right?

if he charges a person with an attack, and not the store, can the store then charge-
never mind, the law is giving criminals too many loopholes. why can't we just beat the $hit outta them when we catchem?

**note to self: this is why you are NOT chosen for jury duty**

Lakeman I agree with you. But I will say this It is a sorry state of affairs when you start lookin at your vote as trying to vote for the lesser of 2 evils. That's the way I've had to look at canidates here in New Jersey.

What ever happen to Public service for the good of the Public.

This years election is no different. I wish we could drop a bomb on Trenton and start all over. But First fill the Capital with all the attornies in the state.
