Suspect Fuel Pump - opinions

1988 Mercruiser 350 Magnum

Fished all day yesterday with no issues. This morning at 5:30, engine fired for a second and quit. Would not restart. Check and found spark so went for fuel issues.

Ended up hooking up a portable fuel tank with bulb from my outboard. Pump up a bit and it would run as long as I kept a little pressure on the bulb. So I'm thinking fuel pump.

Any other suggestions or ideas?

How big of a job is a fuel pump replacement? Supposed to head out in 3 days for a 5 day salmon fishing trip, so I'm kind of under the gun to get this issue resolved.

Appreciate any info our ideas.

Howdy,

EDIT: go up to the Adults Only Sticky and look for your service manual. You'll find all the info on R&R for a fuel pump.

Sounds like a fuel pump to me also. remove the fuel line from the pump discharge and run it into a container. crank the engine and see what happens.

That will verify pump operation (keep a fire extinguisher handy and do this outside with plenty of ventilation)


If the pump is bad you can order a replacement from NAPA autoparts.

That pump is probably more than likely made by Airtex.

Yours may say CARTER on it.

I got a replacement from Schucks/Kragen/Oreilly etc autoparts. They have a Airtex catalog that includes Marine fuel pumps.
