Hello and thanks in advance for any help I can get. I recently purchased a Pontoonwith a Suzuki 1988 DT65. Let me preface thisby saying I am definitely not mechanically inclined; but am fortunate to have a neighbor who is helping me fix this problem

The motor starts perfectly every time and while in neutral, working the throttle works like it should. When we take the boat out, the first sign of a problem is when we put it in reverse to back away from the pier. 8 out of 10 times it will die, then we restart, finish in reverse and then go forward with absolutely no problem whatsoever. We can then cruise around the lake with no problems.

If we stop to fish or talk (say 10 to 15 minutes) it again starts up with no problem. Again, in neutral, the throttle works as it should.. it idles ok, it revs up high if we have the throttle up ... but, when we put it in gear, it will start very very slowly moving forward and then die. Each time we start up without any problem and each time it will die once we put in gear. Maybe after 6 or so times, we can put it in gear and it will go very very slowly... and, kind of nudging the throttle up, it will start getting gas and then proceed as if nothing is wrong.

It does this every time we take the boat out. If we don't stop to talk, no problem. If we stop, starts fine but won't move forward for a number of attempts.

We have changed the spark plugs, checked the fuel and fuel filter.

Has anyone had or heard of this? What causes this and what repairs do we need to make?

Thanks,

Re: Suzuki 1988 DT65 Problems

Obviously the engine is not a conversationalist. It has a timing switch that operates off the #2 carb behind the oil reservoir. Each time you start the engine, #1, the idle is high momentarily, then drops. (BTW, don't raise the warm-up lever if you don't have to. You can end up with rapid piston $$eizure) Then, #2, as you start to accelerate, the timing switch activates an advance and you're able to accelerate normally. Otherwise, it "bogs" and dies. I'd suggest getting a Suzuki tech to check the switch and see if it's functioning correctly--or at all--or if it needs adjustment or replacement.
