hi,
i've just purchased a used 1997 suzuki dt2.2 outboard privately. it ran good on my lake but when i went on a fishing trip, it acted up! the symptom's are:
1- at idle, the engine seems to be knocking(kicking) and the steering is not staying put(yes, i did tightened the shaft).
2- when revving up to a higher speed, you could hear the sound pitch change(fluctuating) on it's own.

the thing i've noticed was the shear pin on the prop was broken and i replaced it before the fishing trip but the prop is somewhat loose even with a new shear pin. the old pin did some wearing on the prop. the question is, could a loose prop be doing my above symptom's?

Re: suzuki 2.2

I'm still not totally clear on your problem, but a loose prop can cause lotsa problems.

If the prop bushing is worn it won't hold the shear pin securely, nor will it allow the prop to snug up. That could cause "wobble" and even a slight bit of tilt/wobble could (I suppose) cause what you are seeing.

The pressure around the prop disk is not equal and is constantly changing. If those fluctuating side loads (for want of a better term) hit a loose prop, the prop will wobble on the shaft.

I'd suggest you pull the prop and check the fit of the bushing and the shear pin into the bushing. Bushings are around $30.00 at the dealer, but last a loooong time.

What confuses me is why it would run fine one time and then exhibit this problem. Not typical.

Lotsa words, but I hope they help.
