Suzuki 225 lower unit crack

I have a 2000 suzuki 225hp outboard. It has a crack where the prop attaches and goes forward about two inches. My question is whether I can do a JB weld for a quick fix that hopefully will hold for a year?

Alternatively, if I do not fix the problem, will it eventually just harm the lower unit? or will it harm the entire engine?

How much would it cost to replace the just the lower unit?

Given where the crack is, it seems like a JB weld might hold? and if not, it will just harm the lower unit, which I will have to replace anyway?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Re: Suzuki 225 lower unit crack

let a proff weld that thing .

if you jb weld it:
a litle impact on the lower unit might crack that thing further to junk.
you got to make it strong again.
jb weld doesnt do that.

get it welded before your next trip.

it is fixable.
dont mess it up if the rest of the lu is good

Re: Suzuki 225 lower unit crack

It cracked because of corrosion between the housing and the propshaft carrier. A stop-gap measurewould be to drill a hole at the end of the crack, which will stop THAT crack, BUT, the problem still exists. In reality, the propshaft carrier should be removed, lessening the strain on the housing. Then it can be ground down and welded, and the unit reassembled--with grease on the propshaft carrier so it doesn't happen again.
