I just bought a 2002 suzuki df140 and a new boat. I bought the boat knowing that the engine mount was corroded and needed to be replaced. I loved the boat and got a great deal on the boat. Here is my issue. The engine mount was not fully broken yet so i tried to take it out on my Palm Beach 205. I had a full tank of gas(87 gallons) and four people on board. The boat had a warning light flashign that said check engine only when the motor hood was on. If it was off the alarm did not sound. I concluded that the exhasut was chocking the motor and decded to try and go for a short try just to check the rest of the motor functionally(rps going to where they should, etc.) with the hood off. No alarms were sounding during the short ride.

Here are Some pics of the same exact motor with the same exact corrsoion issues.

Here is where the engine mount is on the motor (See attached).

My question is how much should I expect to pay for the repair to the engine mount. I would ahve to remove the powerhead and the lower end, replace the the engine mount and reassemble. I read online to expect 4-5 hours of labor; does this sound reasonable? With this fixed should the boat have any issues coming to a plane(2500lb boat). What kind of speed should I expect out of this thing. Just bought the boat and motor. Motor has around 500 hours on it. Sorry for the thousand questions.

Re: Suzuki df140 Engine mount corroded

1st off it is a bad idea to buy a motor with known problems
2nd, bad idea to buy one without running it to see how it runs
3rd, bad idea to run a motor with a alarm going off
now you get to take it in and see what all is wrong with it and what it will cost to fix
Trying to ask us what issues it has is not going to help much as we can not test or see what is going on

Re: Suzuki df140 Engine mount corroded

I tested the motor pretty good when I bought it. Before I put it in the water I ran it in my driveway for over an hour with no issues but the hood was off. I got a great deal on the boat and have a spare motor in my shop(evinrude ocean pro 150). I only had an alarm when the hood was on, without it no alarms sounded.
I beleive I am 99.9 percent sure that the only thing wrong with it is the engine mount. I only asked if five hours of labor is a realistic estimate to replace the engine mount. In order to fix this motor you have to remove the lower and and power head, swap engine mounts and reinstall everything. I have very detailed service records for this boat/motor but not a repair estimate to fix this. The man I purchased thisfrom stated that he got as estimate for 1200-1900 for parts and labor. I was wondering if this is acurate or not.

I solely asked about performance of this motor because I am sure that a 20 foot center console weighing 2500lbs with a df140 is not a unique combo. I know it wont be a very accurate guess but a general discription of how it gets to plane and how fast it goes would be very helpful.

IF the repair estimate repair is to much i will be fixing this motor myself. I have worked plenty on auto and built a few drag cars. The marine aspect of this repair would be new to me but I believe armed with the facotry service manual I should be ok.

From the pictures, the least of your worries is how fast it will go. Expect a lot of bolts to snap on disassembly to the point that it will not be worth repairing. Suggest you attempt to do the repair yourself since you can turn a wrench. Why pay a mech. to break bolts when you can break them yourself ?
Strange that a warning stops if you run it without the cowl. Good luck, glad you got a great deal. Might want to dust off you EVINRUDE. I might sound pessimistic but am beginning to realize that for some reason, japanese bolts are not the same as american bolts. Not trying to do that thing about what country the motor is built in. I have 2 YAMAHAS and a MERC. Am to the point that I am very reluctant to put a wrench on a YAMAHA, no problems so far with the old MERC. FRED

The bolts are all stainless; I hope they are ok. I couldnt sleep last night and developed a plan of attack. I searched the internet and found this link. http://www.thehulltruth.com/boating-forum/120988-removing-power-head-suzuki-df-140s.html
My plan was the pull the lower unit and power head but someone suggested leaving the powerhead on the motor. Here is there suggestion.
"drop lower uint disconnect ground lead on driveshaft houseing ,support engine at power head take lower motor mounts off .take eight bolts off holding houseing on" followed by
"lifting eye is fine.you are just supporting the power head because all the wieght will be on the front mounts.should order water tube bushings too. "

This will save me a ton of time. I have pulled the lower end off of an old evinrude before. I am comfortable doing that. The power ehad had me worried a bit but I think by supporting the motor like he mentioned will save me a bunch of work/time. He also suggested the water tube bushings, is there anything else I should do while I am in the lower unit. Should I replace the impelller? Motor has around 500 hours but has been fully maintained by a marina. I am replacing the Oil, lower end fluid, and both fuel filters while I am in there. I also found the parts for 812 bucks shipped which is 200 less than a local marina quoted me for the engine mount and all the seals/gaskets.

Thanks guys
