Suzuki DF140 Power Loss at High RPM

2002 Suzuki DF140 4-stroke. Had in storage yard for the last 7 months (ever since Ivan!). Anyway...<br /><br />Starts great, runs at low RPM's great but at full throttle will run fine then after a brief period (few minutes or so) will loss a 1000 RPM's, after another brief period returns to normal, and then again, back down, then back to normal.<br /><br />Any throughts out there on what the problem might be. I've got a fuel filter on order... water in the gas??? <br /><br />Thanks.

You can just about bet you have a fuel problem.

Get a fuel/water separator.<br />I do not say that it is lack of that separator that has caused the result now but it is likely.

Most likly a fuel pressure problem, check the fuel pressure as outlined in service manual.

Change the fuel bulb/line before spending any big money. Had the same problem with a DT140 that sat idle for long periods ... $850 later I found out it was the fuel bulb breaking down on the inside and choking off the check valve under high flow demand.

Thanks guys...<br />I did install a Racor Fuel Filter/Water Separator and have a question...<br />Does the bowl fill up with only water? I started the motor and the bowl filled up completely with an amber looking liquid (water or is it gas?). If it is water (with a little gas) then it looks like I got quite a bit of water in my gas.

Water should be visible as clear liquid or drops at the bottom of the amber gasoline (water is heavier than gas and sinks to the bottom) the bowl should ideally be all gas.

Hi,<br />If You have a Racor fuel/water separator with a clear bowl You will get mostly water in that bowl. Just drain it with the drain plug then be prepared to drain again after a while until you get no water anymore.<br /><br />Fuel/water separator filters use chemically treated filter media to repel water which then settles by gravity to the bottom of the filter. Accumulated water can be drained from the filter if equipped with a drain valve or plug.

So if I'm understanding...<br /><br />The bowl looks like all gas (no clear liquid). If there is any water I would have a "layer" of clear liquid on the very bottom. I would use the drain plug to then drain off the water layer leaving only amber colored gas in the bowl. It is otherwise normal for the bowl to be full of gas.

I had the exact same problem with my DF70 last year. Replacing the spark plugs fixed the problem.<br /><br />Dave Gulczinski

choctawtk : I had a similar problem. Engine would idle and run fine and then start losing power after a period of High speed running. I eventually found out that the screen on the fuel pickup tube was sucking up debris and getting clogged. It was so troublesome that I removed the screen and let the junk come up in the racor filter. Good to Go now.

i got the same problem with my df-115... just got all new filters (high pressure.. main filter and the small one at the fuel pump) the engine ran great in about 2 min... then teh same problen came back.. my engine goes from 5500 rpm and slowly ends at 3500 rpms... im lost of reson.. maybe a fuel line....
