My bro & I bought this motor used and the guy said it ran great but the carbs probably needed cleaning.

We were a very eager to see if this thing would run and used starting fluid to get her going. I know we should have used fuel mixture, I will get a spray bottle for next time.

Eventually it would Idle pretty well, and It sounded very strong when at high rpm's, but we had to play around with the choke and the throttle to keep it running. When it was put into gear it just stalled. The red oil light on the front was flickering on and off a bit.

Do I need to buy 3 carb Kits?

How can I make sure the oil is OK?

What should I tell my brother if he starts trying to fire it up without checking this out? Are we going to destroy this thing?

Thanks

you will if you havent already
my suggestion is purchase the suzuki service manual. that 30 is very strong and reliable but if you continue on your present course will be a junker in a short time.
most of the later models had a filter/flow sensor between the oil tank and the pump. if the filter clogged the oil alarm would trigger due to excessive oil pump inlet vacum.
but as it sprays oil behind the carb its slightly more tolerant of running lean.
two strokes dont like lean, they die.

Thanks for the info.
I think we might just pay someone to tune it up. From what I have read this seems like it's a pretty sweet little motor, I can't wait to get it out on Mosquito lagoon and snag some fat redfish.

why not try it yourself?
that motor, while a tad touchy, is actually very simple.
can ya post a year model?
and how much mechanical experience do you have? most of the maint is monky work. but even for monky work you will pay 75-100 per hour.

It's an 89.
I think I can handle monkey work. Working on a lawnmower in shop class 15 years ago is about the extent of my experince. From reading all the old posts on this forum I'm starting to get interested in being able to fix my own motor, so I think I will go ahead and give it a try.

Do you think I need to spend $90 on three carb kits or should I just take them apart and give them a good cleaning first?

Are new spark plugs a given? They looked clean.

Thanks for your help.

my experience is usually the gaskets are reusable, thats why for many years suzuki offered no kits.
the service manual is imperative and so is actually reading it.
digital photos dont hurt for reassembly. as bad as I hate after market manuals they are usually better than that era's factory ones.
however
there are some on this board that can talk ya through it if your willing to buy/make or rent certain test equipments.
I normally dont get involved with suzuki stuff on this forum as my training only covered 2 stroke from 85 to 95.
but I actually have all the service manuals and the electrical troubleshooting manuals for the suzy line from about 85 to 95 sitting on the shelf in my living room.
ask me what you wish from your service manual.

when ya get it read it and ask questions. I found its helpful as you read it have a note pad and write down anything you dont understand the ask.

You don't need to buy the carb kits, just needs a good cleaning, if I was you I will disconnect the oil injection totally and run it on premix, these are great engines but the oil injection on these always gives problems ... tell us the progress

Sorry to but in, but, I also have 3 cyl Suzuki 25 hp. Oil light comes on at idle only, I speed up light goes out. Where do you think the problem is?

Routine stuff guys. Get a manual.
Do a compression test. If that is good continue.
Clean the carbs and check that the floats are level. Dont use carb cleaner use the carb cleaning kit from Gunk. This is the way to remove the shelac junk from the carbs. If the gaskets are questionable use new ones.
Rebuild the fuel pump.
Pull the lower unit and replace the impeller and the oil.
These are all basics before the motor has a chance of running correctly.

Re: Suzuki DT 30 3-cyl Oil Injected - Oil Light

I got the manual (seloc) I should have gotten the factory manual, this one is not detailed enough. But it has helped a little. The red light on my DT 25 is on. Replaced the cooling water sensor. Worked for a day, light back on. Cleaned oil flow sensor (very dirty) light went out but could tell a senor was still only allowing to run at low speed. Turn motor off, turned motor on, red light is back on and no water flowing through cooling system. I think my impeller went out. Yes I had the hose running to it and the water was on. Back to the drawing board. Two more tries, if no luck I'll go to a dealer an hours drive away.
